Abasa -- He frowned
42 verses · meccan
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ
The Prophet frowned and turned away
Ayah 1أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰ
Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]
Ayah 2وَمَا يُدۡرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ
But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified
Ayah 3أَوۡ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓ
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him
Ayah 4أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰ
As for he who thinks himself without need
Ayah 5فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ
To him you give attention
Ayah 6وَمَا عَلَيۡكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified
Ayah 7وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسۡعَىٰ
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
Ayah 8وَهُوَ يَخۡشَىٰ
While he fears [Allah]
Ayah 9فَأَنتَ عَنۡهُ تَلَهَّىٰ
From him you are distracted
Ayah 10كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣱ
No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder
Ayah 11فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ
So whoever wills may remember it
Ayah 12فِي صُحُفࣲ مُّكَرَّمَةࣲ
[It is recorded] in honored sheets
Ayah 13مَّرۡفُوعَةࣲ مُّطَهَّرَةِۭ
Exalted and purified
Ayah 14بِأَيۡدِي سَفَرَةࣲ
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels
Ayah 15كِرَامِۭ بَرَرَةࣲ
Noble and dutiful
Ayah 16قُتِلَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكۡفَرَهُۥ
Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he
Ayah 17مِنۡ أَيِّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ
From what substance did He create him
Ayah 18مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him
Ayah 19ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ
Then He eased the way for him
Ayah 20ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقۡبَرَهُۥ
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him
Ayah 21ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him
Ayah 22كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقۡضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ
No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him
Ayah 23فَلۡيَنظُرِ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ
Then let mankind look at his food
Ayah 24أَنَّا صَبَبۡنَا ٱلۡمَآءَ صَبࣰّ ا
How We poured down water in torrents
Ayah 25ثُمَّ شَقَقۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ شَقࣰّ ا
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts]
Ayah 26فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا حَبࣰّ ا
And caused to grow within it grain
Ayah 27وَعِنَبࣰ ا وَقَضۡبࣰ ا
And grapes and herbage
Ayah 28وَزَيۡتُونࣰ ا وَنَخۡلࣰ ا
And olive and palm trees
Ayah 29وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلۡبࣰ ا
And gardens of dense shrubbery
Ayah 30وَفَٰكِهَةࣰ وَأَبࣰّ ا
And fruit and grass
Ayah 31مَّتَٰعࣰ ا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock
Ayah 32فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ
But when there comes the Deafening Blast
Ayah 33يَوۡمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلۡمَرۡءُ مِنۡ أَخِيهِ
On the Day a man will flee from his brother
Ayah 34وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ
And his mother and his father
Ayah 35وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ
And his wife and his children
Ayah 36لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ شَأۡنࣱ يُغۡنِيهِ
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him
Ayah 37وُجُوهࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ مُّسۡفِرَةࣱ
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright
Ayah 38ضَاحِكَةࣱ مُّسۡتَبۡشِرَةࣱ
Laughing, rejoicing at good news
Ayah 39وَوُجُوهࣱ يَوۡمَئِذٍ عَلَيۡهَا غَبَرَةࣱ
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust
Ayah 40تَرۡهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ
Blackness will cover them
Ayah 41أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡكَفَرَةُ ٱلۡفَجَرَةُ
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones
